I am requesting approval to backfill a pharmacy technician FTE that has gradually been lost over the past several months and consolidate those hours into a full-time (1.0 FTE) pharmacy technician position. I do not believe we ever backfilled Rich Armelino fte with a new technician because at the time he was down to a 0.6fte. Prior to him being a 0.6fte he was a 0.8fte and we also did not pursue back fill of that 0.2fte dropdown for him. We also have Lauren Burgess who is not currently working to her full 0.6 fte at this time. We will drop her down to 0.4 or 0.5fte as she is currently transitioning to working in the ultrasound department as she has completed or nearly completed her schooling. Given these pieces of FTE we are asking for a 1.0 fte pharmacy technician to fill some of our gaps/holes which include optimizing pyxis machines and doing unit inspections while building some redundancy in our IV room compounding role. At current we are utilizing some overtime hours to accomplish these tasks that are mandatory(inspections) and crucial to our workflows (rotation of medication stock in pyxis to prevent waste). We are also anticipating a departure or 2 in the near future which I know cannot be used as the only reason for requesting a replacement position. I am just trying to, at current, use the bits and pieces of FTE we had not yet replaced to get a full time technician to fill some of the current gaps in our practice. We as a pharmacy department assist everywhere and anywhere we can and stretch ourselves pretty thin. Our productivity remains very high >125% consistently even though we only have 1 open pharmacist FTE that we are currently recruiting for. While anticipated future staff turnover is not the basis for this request, restoring the technician FTE that has been lost over time will better position the department to sustain current performance levels, improve scheduling flexibility, and reduce vulnerability to significant staffing shortages should additional vacancies occur. Approval of this request would allow the pharmacy department to continue providing the high level of service and operational support expected by the organization while maintaining compliance and efficiency.
