Position Summary

As the Behavioral Health Admissions Coordinator, he/she participates in all aspects of the admissions process to include medical record and intake screening for medical clearance. Additionally, he/she must remain knowledgeable regarding rules in behavioral health care to ensure reimbursement for care and will work with utilization review, insurance companies, and community mental health agencies to obtain preauthorization's for inpatient treatment. Must demonstrate excellent customer service in working with both internal and external agencies..

What the Behavioral Health Admissions Coordinator will need:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

  • Current RN Licensure in the State of Michigan, BLS

  • 1-2 years’ experience working with in a healthcare related field

  • 3+ years of inpatient health care to include experience working in case management and dealing with insurance agencies or Community Mental Health Agencies (CMH) preferred

What the Behavioral Health Admissions Coordinator will do:

  • Coordinate admissions and/or intakes, including interfacing with insurance and managed care companies for authorization.

  • Works effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team to insure excellent patient experience.

  • Responsible for all aspects of the Behavioral Health Unit admissions process from assessment of a patient’s appropriateness based on several variables, completing intake paperwork & communicating written and verbal information effectively to various members of the healthcare team.

  • Receives and manages inquiry calls, documents information in an accurate and timely manner to assure rapid response to referral sources and/or patients and the appropriate tracking of information occurs.

  • Effectively communicates the scope of services offered by Mercy Health's Behavioral Health Unit demonstrating a base knowledge of services, regulatory requirements, and accreditation rules and reimbursements issues.

  • Obtains pre-certification for services from insurance companies and maintains communication with the billing department as needed in regards to patient’s payer sources.

  • Maintains referral log and communicates referral information to the manager and director as required.

  • As directed by the unit manager, participates in performance improvement plans which ensures important processes and activities are measured, assessed and improved upon.

  • Reviews nursing documentation to ensure compliance with HBIPs measures and coordinates with nursing staff regarding education and documentation standards as related to the admissions process.

  • Ensures that medical record documentation protocols are complied with. Ensures that persons’ assessment information is entered into the medical records on a timely basis and in accordance with established organizational and departmental procedures.

  • Responsible to role model the mission and values of the organization, presenting a professional image that is projected in appearance, attitudes and behaviors, time management and communication skills.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
