SUMMARY
Prepares micro slides, adequate for pathologic interpretation of disease using routine and special procedures of fixative, processing and staining of surgical and necropsy specimens
Minimum: Associate's degree or successful completion of NAACLS accredited Histotechnician certification Program.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree
Credentials/Licensure Minimum: ASCP certification for Histology Technologist or Histology Technician Laboratory; OR eligible for certification and must become certified within two years of hire.
Related Experience Minimum: One year of laboratory experience.
Preferred: One year histology experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum:
Minimum: Ability to operate an embedding station, microtome, tissue processor and cryostat.
Preferred: Computer skills, customer service skills, troubleshooting skills.
Physical/Mental
Minimum: Exposure to infectious disease, hazardous chemicals and carcinogens. Considerable walking, standing, bending or occasional lifting of objects weighing 40 pounds or less. Independent judgment required to deal with each tissue specimen. Ability to withstand constant interruptions
WORKING CONDITIONS
Conditions are fast paced with moderate to high stress. Volume driven work and a high level of quality is necessary. Requires the ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize. Requires the ability to work as a team and independently within each shift of work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
▪ Operates all histology equipment and perform all histological procedures.
▪ Performs special staining and instrument troubleshooting.
▪ Performs analytical functions such as calculating, weighing and correlating of information.
▪ Understands and correctly uses computer systems.
▪ Organizes and prioritizes work to meet customer needs.
▪ Must be a team player, able to flex out and help with completing work as soon as possible.
▪ Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills to patients, clients, hospital and laboratory staff.
▪ Demonstrates good customer service skills.
▪ Performs other related duties as assigned.
