Working in a single assigned area, the Phlebotomist I provides specimen collection, registration and processing services to patients in the main hospital, outpatient lab draw stations, and mental health and skilled nursing facilities at off-site locations and clinics. High volume work, 50% of duties involve computer utilization with targets to meet. Provides clerical support to the Pathology Department and other duties as assigned.
Education
Minimum High school diploma.
Preferred Phlebotomy Training or Phlebotomy Technical School.
Credentials/Licensure
Minimum Valid Michigan driver’s license.
Preferred ASCP certification for Phlebotomy (must obtain certification within one year of hire).
Related Experience
Preferred Six months phlebotomy experience in a health care setting.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Strong interpersonal and clerical skill. Minimum of 40 wpm.
Preferred Computer skills and word processing abilities.
Computer Competency
Familiarity with standard desktop and windows based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions. Ability will be assessed during the hiring process through Human Resources.
Physical/Mental
Minimum: Sitting for long periods of time (frequently); mobile; bending, stooping and reaching above head and lifting and carrying as part of daily responsibilities (occasionally). Keyboard, repetitive tasks of typing and phone use (frequently).
Provides excellent customer service (i.e. patient, physicians, clients, associates, etc.) using AIDET techniques; responds to STAT requests immediately.
Performs venipuncture collections on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. Specimen processing for testing.
Arranges an efficient collection route for offsite draws in regard to miles and time, while being sensitive to time constraints of tests being drawn.
Efficiently uses all information systems (Chartmaxx, PowerChart, MCL, Health Quest, etc.) to create electronic medical records.
Verifies insurance coverage.
Makes independent decisions and adapts to non-routine situations.
Correctly identifies patients and accurately enters patient encounter demographics.
Collects throat cultures and blood specimens appropriately and gives clear instructions for patient urine/stool collection.
Properly processes all specimen types in a timely and accurate manner.
Operates multiline phone in a professional, accurate and efficient manner.
Dispatches and monitors courier pick-up and delivery.
Keeps work area clean, neat and organized so that procedures are performed in an accurate, timely manner and at the end of shift communicates to next shift.
Completes day-to-day clerical duties to include (but not limited to) filing, sorting mail, answering phones, and filling office supply orders.
Participates in process improvement and LEAN initiatives, identifying waste and troubleshooting problem through to resolution.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
