This role supports the day-to-day execution of cigarette and tobacco tax compliance processes, with a strong focus on transactional data, reconciliations, and coordination with operations and third-party providers. The position is well-suited for candidates with experience in warehouse accounting, inventory accounting, or operational finance who are looking to expand into tax.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Compile and provide sales and inventory data to external provider for preparation of cigarette and tobacco tax returns.
Retrieve data from external systems/portals and prepare monthly journal entries to record cigarette and tobacco business activity.
Process and submit tobacco tax payments not handled by third-party providers, ensuring deadlines are met.
Perform monthly reconciliations of cigarette and tobacco sales and activity for warehouse locations; investigate and resolve variances.
Prepare and submit tax reclaim filings across multiple states, following established procedures.
Track and apply state-specific cigarette and tobacco tax rules to ensure accurate reporting and payments.
Assist with state tax audits by gathering documentation and responding to information requests.
Review and respond to state tax notices; follow up with state agencies as needed to resolve discrepancies.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Bachelor’s Degree (Required) in Accounting, Finance, or another related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered.
Two years Accountant experience preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organization and analytical skills; attention to detail and ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Experience working with transactional data, reconciliations, or inventory systems.
Familiarity with journal entries and month-end close processes.
Exposure to multi-state operations or indirect tax is a plus, but not required.
Working knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Strong skills in MS office (Access, Excel, Word).
