Job Description:
Our Internship Program: SpartanNash offers paid internships to active students interested in careers within the grocery industry, in areas such as accounting/finance, graphic services, human resources, corporate affairs and communications, information technology, management, marketing and merchandising, supply chain, engineering, and more.
As a Transportation Maintenance Intern you will be part of SpartanNash’s Internship Program. At SpartanNash, our Internship Program is designed to give exposure to the grocery and distribution industry, be engaging in real-world problem-solving, and be immersive in social and educational opportunities with other interns. The internship is a paid, full-time summer opportunity from May 19th, 2025– August 8th, 2025.
Responsibilities:
- Preventative Maintenance Support:
- Assist in scheduling and documenting preventative maintenance services
- Work with senior technicians to ensure timely inspections and repairs of vehicles and equipment
- Inventory Management:
- Monitor and track spare parts, tools, and equipment inventory
- Assist in ordering and organizing parts for maintenance tasks
- Data Entry and Reporting:
- Enter maintenance data into fleet management software
- Help prepare reports on fleet performance, repair costs, and downtime analysis
- Safety Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with safety standards during repairs and maintenance
- Help maintain clean and safe work areas
- Assist with Special Projects:
- Participate in fleet audits or reviews to improve operational efficiency
- Learn Regulatory Standards:
- Get exposure to DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations and other relevant guidelines for fleet management
- To collaborate with cross functional teams to contribute to its objectives
- Responsible to complete or participate in at least one strategic project (Capstone Project) during the internship and possibly give a short presentation to the executive team that showcases the project
- Participate in learning opportunities that may include tours of our warehouses and retail stores, a community service event (such as SpartanNash Expo, Helping Hands, or Special Olympics)
- Attend weekly professional development workshops for developing skills, team building, etc.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management, or related field
- Be an active student through the summer
- Graduate December 2025 or later
- Be willing to attend mandatory, in-person events (2-3 events in Grand Rapids, Michigan including but not limited to orientation and/or intern gatherings)
- GPA of 3.0 or greater (Preferred)
- Relevant work experience such as a prior internship or campus experience (Preferred)
- Microsoft Office proficiency (Required)
- Technical Skills (Required)
- Basic Mechanical Knowledge: Familiarity with vehicle components, machinery, and tools used for fleet maintenance
- Analytical Skills (Required)
- Problem-Solving: Ability to think critically and help identify potential issues before they become larger problems
- Attention to Detail: Ensure thorough inspections and accurate documentation of maintenance tasks
- Organizational Skills (Required)
- Time Management: Ability to assist in planning and executing scheduled maintenance tasks efficiently
- Inventory Management: Basic understanding of managing parts and supplies, ensuring that stock is maintained for critical components
- Interpersonal and Teamwork Skills (Required)
- Communication: Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, mechanics, and other team members
- Learning Mindset (Required)
- Willingness to Learn: Eagerness to gain hands-on experience and adapt to new tasks or technologies
- Adaptability: Open to learning different types of vehicles or equipment in the fleet
- Safety and Compliance (Preferred)
- Safety Protocols: Knowledge of workplace safety regulations and procedures, especially in a mechanical or transportation setting
- DOT and Industry Standards: Awareness of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and fleet compliance requirements (helpful, but can be learned on the job)
