Accounting Manager
Reports to: Finance Director
Job Summary: This position is responsible for managing all accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and cash receipts functions, in compliance with governmental accounting standards and established internal controls. This includes managing accounting programs and systems, supervising professional and clerical support staff, and preparing and approving financial reports and journal entries.
Work Location: Holland, Michigan. This is an office-first position with the potential for occasional remote work following successful job orientation (which typically requires three to six months).
Essential Duties
· Manage the daily operations and staff directly involved in the accounting functions, including hiring, training, delegating work assignments, and conducting performance evaluations.
· Oversee the preparation and review of monthly and annual financial statements for all funds, ensuring accuracy, reasonableness, and timely reporting across departments.
· Oversee cash management activities, including monitoring cash flow, reviewing bank reconciliations, and ensuring accurate recording of transfers, investments, and expenditures.
· Review and approve documents processed in the financial system, including journal entries, interfaces, and accounts payable payments to ensure accuracy before closing the period.
· Coordinate and manage the technical preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
· Lead the preparation and coordination of the annual financial audit, including year-end closing activities, preparation of audit schedules, and liaison with external auditors.
· Develop and implement processes to enhance efficiency within the Accounting Department.
· Develop, document, and maintain strong internal control procedures to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards.
· Manage the preparation and reporting required to comply with governmental regulations.
· Coordinate relationships with bankers and auditors and serve as a technical resource or back-up at board meetings when necessary.
· Perform related tasks as needed.
Essential Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
· At least seven years’ experience in accounting and finance, including managerial experience.
· Computer skills to effectively utilize accounting software systems.
· Management skills necessary to manage the activities of a diverse staff.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with enterprise accounting software applications, including Multiview financial software.
· MBA in Accounting or Finance.
· Professional certification such as CPA, CMA or CIA.
· Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
· Ability to express ideas when presenting possible solutions to complex problems.
· Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5, Applied Math – 5, Graphic Literacy – 5).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
· Normal office environment with minimum discomfort due to noise, dirt and dust.
· Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to working on multiple projects requiring attention to detail.
