This position manages and supervises evening custodial staff and services including operations, special event coordination, trash removal, inspections, and maintenance of building entrances on the GVSU Allendale campus. This is a Monday-Friday evening position.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1. Managing and supervising all evening custodial services including basic custodial operations, special event coordination, requisitioning/purchasing supplies, trash removal, pest control and maintenance of building entrances.
2. Coordinating activities of custodial staff responsible for completion of work orders.
3. Routinely inspecting designated buildings and entrances, documenting finding’s, and taking appropriate corrective measures to ensure satisfactory performance.
4. Coordinating assigned activities and special projects with various academic, athletic, and administrative departments to ensure effective service levels.
5. Assuring the policies of the University, and of Facilities Services and Planning, as well as all safety regulations, are known and observed by custodial staff.
6. Working with the director and Associate Vice President of Facilities Services in establishing priorities for budget, custodial purchases, and capital equipment.
7. Maintaining effective communication with customers, staff, and co-workers.
8. Interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising hourly service staff including interpretation of bargaining agreements, imposition of discipline, and grievance response.
9. Hiring and supervising student and temporary employees on an as-needed basis.
10. Assisting other Facilities Services staff as assigned which includes rotating weekend duties and coordinating special events.
11. Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by director or AVP – Facilities Services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Minimum Qualifications
- Four-year degree (preference to be in business, human resource management or facilities management) and/or 5 years of equivalent experience.
- Five years of experience managing either custodial staff or hourly staff in a similar institutional setting.
- Requires excellent written and communication skills and demonstrated customer service orientation.
- Demonstrated supervisory ability and fiscal and labor management skills.
- Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written.
- Familiarity with the work and methods utilized by all staff within areas of responsibility.
- Budget management experience.
- Experience working in or administering a collective bargaining agreement.
Preferred Qualifications
- APPA Certified Education Facilities Professional (CEFP Credentials) or equivalent preferred.
Working Conditions:
Normal office environment. Primarily working Monday-Friday evenings and after normal business hours to support the evening operations on the Allendale Campus. Some weekend work required. Some travel may be required. Flexible work arrangements can be accommodated with director approval.
Salary & Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $65,000; commensurate with experience.
