Summary: This position is responsible for patrolling buildings, grounds, and parking areas to ensure a safe environment, maintaining traffic control, and enforcing university rules and regulations. You will respond to emergencies promptly and complete necessary reports, while also providing assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to meet their daily safety needs.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Education with:
- Ability to engage in constructive problem resolution related to customer service, safety, and security.
- Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently.
- Ability to train and oversee the work of student staff.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as security rules and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors that use the university's facilities.
- Willingness to exhibit proper attitude and demeanor to establish and maintain good public relations.
- Must be able to work all shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must have a valid State of Michigan license with an acceptable traffic record and no criminal records which would question credibility or public trust of security staff.
- Physical, mental, and emotional ability to execute duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 6 months to 1 year of relevant work experience, including directly related security or law enforcement training or experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Relevant first aid training with knowledge of CPR.
- Related experience in a campus/university environment.
Responsibilities – Essential Functions
- Patrol campus buildings and grounds. Prevent and identify incidents of a criminal nature, fire safety, security issues along with parking and traffic issues.
- Respond to calls for service related to possible criminal activity, investigate incidents and report activity to appropriate unit or department.
- Escort individuals off campus where appropriate.
- Investigate complaints made by faculty, staff, students and visitors.
- Investigate traffic accidents.
- Respond to calls involving medical emergencies. Administer first aid and/or call for additional assistance as needed.
- Report security incidents and unusual or hazardous conditions on campus to appropriate officials.
- Issue citations for campus parking.
- Assist area police, local fire and rescue personnel with investigations on campus.
- Provide security services as directed for special events.
- Set up traffic/parking barricades.
- Provide escorts and special transports as needed.
- Assist students, faculty, staff and visitors with problems with keys, locks, doors, vehicles, etc.
- Give visitors directions and general campus information.
- Check IDs of visitors.
- Assist in overseeing the activities of student workers.
- Prepare all required paper work on security activities including daily report forms, informational reports, general incident reports, etc., and others as assigned.
- Understand and comply with MSDS and HAZCOM procedures as part of GVSU's comprehensive OSHA compliance program.
- Understand and comply with the GVSU Security Staff Workbook.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
- Receives general instruction from a designated supervisor but is generally expected to work independently.
Supervision Exercised:
Salary: Minimum starting wage of $22.00/hour
