Position Summary:
This position will meet with students diagnosed with learning, psychological, and/or cognitive disabilities to provide academic advising and support. This position will connect students to appropriate resources, support services, and educational experiences to facilitate academic and personal success based on their individual needs and develop and implement academic strategies with and for students. Two positions available.
Salary & Benefits:
$44,000 - $54,000; commensurate with experience

Primary Duties:
Provide intentional academic advising to students that facilitates student success, persistence, and degree completion. Connect students to appropriate resources, support services, and educational experiences to facilitate academic and personal success based on their individual needs.
Evaluate documentation, including but not limited to IEP’s, medical reports, psychological reports, 504 reports, and psychiatric/psychological assessment.
Meet and interview students as part of the assessment process and determine appropriate A.D.A. accommodations for each qualified student. Conduct workshops to faculty and staff and orientation about disability services.
Collaborate and participate in open house events, orientations, and graduation events as needed.
Stay current with disability services trends, law, and best practices.
Educate students and families as needed about accommodations in high school vs. in college, inform about the support services available at GVSU and through presentations.
Identify and follow up on accommodation needs (e.g., extended time, audiobooks, note takers, etc.) Assess and verify disability documentation, identify functional limitations, and put in place reasonable accommodations.
Meet with students, either by appointment, drop by basis, or impromptu phone contact. Support University and Division retention, well-being, and inclusion efforts and initiatives.

Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum two (2) years of experience in higher education, social work, public administration, or related field; or an equivalent of education/experience combination that sufficiently meets the education/experience requirements.
Experience managing and supervising teams and/or projects.
Experience working with and understanding persons with disabilities.
Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Program evaluation and assessment experience.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of the ADAAA and Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software and standard office equipment.
Must be able to protect and safeguard sensitive information with the highest level of confidentiality.
Strong customer service skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master's degree.
Experience in higher education.
Professional experience with education, disabilities, or autism spectrum disorders desirable.
Experience with assistive technology.
Bilingual in Spanish.
Working Conditions:
Normal office environment. Some travel and evening/weekend work may be required. Fast-paced, busy environment with frequent high-stress conditions.
