Human Resources Generalist
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Department: Human Resources & Volunteer Services
Reports To: Manager, Human Resources
Schedule: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt | Primarily Monday-Friday with flexibility to support occasional evenings, weekends, and organizational events.

The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in delivering outstanding HR service throughout the employee lifecycle. From onboarding new team members to supporting employee relations, recruiting, HR operations, and engagement initiatives, this position helps ensure employees and managers receive responsive, accurate, and people-focused support.

What You’ll Do
Employee Lifecycle & HR Support.
  • Coordinate employee onboarding, orientation, and lifecycle transactions including new hires, promotions, transfers, leaves, and separations.
  • Ensure HR documentation and employee records are completed accurately and on time.
  • Support offboarding activities and transition processes while providing excellent customer service.
Employee Relations & Manager Support
  • Serve as a trusted HR resource for employees regarding policies, procedures, and routine employment questions.
  • Partner with managers on HR processes, policy interpretation, and employee support.
  • Assist with employee concerns while escalating more complex matters appropriately.
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Support
  • Coordinate recruiting activities including job postings, interview scheduling, candidate communication, reference checks, and pre-employment activities.
  • Partner with hiring managers to deliver an exceptional candidate experience.
  • Support hiring events, employment branding initiatives, and workforce planning efforts as needed.
HR Operations & Compliance
  • Maintain HRIS records, personnel files, and workforce data with accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Process HR transactions and generate reports to support business operations.
  • Assist with payroll, benefits administration, and compliance with employment laws and organizational policies.
Employee Experience & Continuous Improvement
  • Coordinate employee engagement, recognition, wellness, communications, and training initiatives.
  • Recommend improvements to HR processes, workflows, and service delivery.
  • Support implementation of new HR programs, technology, and organizational initiatives.

What You Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to five years of progressive Human Resources experience.
  • Strong understanding of HR principles, employment law, HR best practices, and employee lifecycle processes.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting multiple HR functional areas including onboarding, employee relations, recruiting, and HR operations.
  • Experience using Paycor or similar HRIS platforms.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification.

Working Conditions: This position primarily works in an office environment while regularly interacting with employees, managers, volunteers, and guests throughout the Gardens campus. Responsibilities require frequent movement between offices, meeting spaces, and other work areas, along with regular computer use and occasional support of organizational events. Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays may be required to support HR initiatives and organizational needs.
Physical Requirements: The Human Resources Generalist must be able to work at a computer for extended periods, communicate effectively with employees and leaders, and move throughout the Gardens campus. The role occasionally requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds, setting up meeting or training spaces, and supporting HR events. Strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced environment are essential.
