Job Summary
Nursing director assumes 24 hour accountability for the delivery of quality services within the regional hospital(s) by providing leadership and direction to department members, developing and implementing a department quality plan, consistently applying appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, clinical paths and standards of care, participating in the continuous performance improvement activities and, through support and implementation of an educational plan, targeting the continued development of their department staff members. This position requires the ability to assess, treat, care for, understand, and react effectively to the unique needs of the age of the patient population for whom services are provided.
Essential Functions
- Develops department philosophy, annual operational plan, goals and objectives that reflect and support the mission, values, vision and strategic goals of the organization in conjunction with the CNO.
- Assumes accountability for adequate staffing within departments. Recruits, interviews and hires new staff. Monitors performance, initiates counseling, disciplinary action or termination as appropriate.
- Promotes staff development through orientation, training and continuing education (i.e., seminars, inservices and workshops), delegation of duties and overall performance management. Takes the initiative and develops leadership behaviors which contribute to department-wide development by sharing ideas, personal knowledge and experiences openly and directly.
- Develops and recommends department budgets including capital, operations and personnel budgets, accounting for qualified and competent staffing, facilities, space and equipment needs to provide care and services for the organization.
- Assumes 24 hour accountability for high quality services delivered within department, continually assessing and improving the care and services provided, utilizing performance improvement principles; identifies the many customers served, develops an understanding of their needs and initiates actions to improve overall customer satisfaction; develops proactive behavior to anticipate and respond to customer’s needs; maintains quality control programs and safe work and patient care environments.
- Coordinates and integrates existing intradepartmental and interdepartmental services. Works cooperatively with other health care providers and community members to assess and provide appropriate services and identify needed services not currently provided. Integrates clinical, departmental and organizational strategic plans with community input and health care trends to create proposals for changes in the delivery of health care and services. Fosters a learning environment in all contexts.
- Creates and maintains a culture of safety by being knowledgeable about patient and environmental safety issues within the organization. Ensures that patient safety is improved and safety issues are addressed.
- Directs the preparation and maintenance of nursing reports and records. Prepares periodic reports for administration as required. Meets requirements and standards of regulating agencies and organizations.
Qualifications
- Required Master's Degree in Nursing, healthcare admin, or in a related field. If Master's is not in nursing, then a BSN or DNP is required. Those in the Regional Nursing Director role before 8.22.2019 will have 4 years from January 1, 2020 to obtain the proper education for the role.
- 3 years of relevant experience direct nursing experience Required
- 3 years of relevant experience nursing leadership Required
- LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required Or
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
- CRT-Board Cert Nursing Professional Development (BC-NPD) - ANCC American Nurses Credentialing Center 1 Year required
