The VICU RN position is a technology-based role that requires a high-level communication, mentoring, and critical thinking skills. Candidates must be able to effectively function in a position with a high level of independence and can use and access available resources. This role involves collaborating with other professions, as well as a customer service-based approach that cultivates high level and trusting relationships with all team members involved in patient care. Duties of this role include but are not limited to: monitoring ECG rhythms and pressure waveforms, a thorough assessment of a patient’s condition via the electronic health record and other means, predicting next steps in reducing risk for patient decline, the use of high quality cameras to apply nursing physical assessment skills, frequent communication with bedside care providers and the VICU provider, mentoring and supporting staff with unfamiliar tasks or situations, and the ability to lend unassuming fresh eyes or recognizing differences in standards of practice across the system to improve the program/clinical practice. The intensity of the situations in which this individual may be involved with, also requires conflict resolution skills to assist in maintaining trusting relationships with entire the care team.

Scope of work
The RN, under the ANA scope of practice utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge. The RN provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures and recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes. The RN partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care and develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in health record.
