Wage: $22.50 after 1 year $23.00
This is an AFSCME Union Position.
An employee in this position must stay in this position for a period of at least two years before bidding on another City position.

Hours of Work: Variable
6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (1-hour lunch)
11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (1-hour lunch)
To include one Saturday a month as a regular shift

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Department Head, performs moderately skilled and responsible maintenance of City Hall, Public Safety Building, and Library and their grounds. Ability to clean and maintain cleanliness as directed; ability to perform various tasks involving physical strength. This employee may be called on as time permits to assist in cleanup/grounds maintenance at other locations in the City and at special festivals or events.

Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.) To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; replenish supplies in restrooms.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop and maintain floors as needed.
  • Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment.
  • Wash windows, mirrors and walls.
  • Clean desks and countertops.
  • Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles.
  • Keep buildings entries (sidewalks) free of snow and ice.
  • Keep buildings and grounds free of debris and litter; assist with landscaping maintenance.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare rooms for conferences and meetings.
  • Replace light bulbs and adjust blinds.
  • Identify and report building maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Provide supervisor with a list of supplies and materials on an as-needed basis.
  • Make minor maintenance repairs as needed; unclog drains; repair furniture and equipment.
  • Assist streets and parks in cleaning maintenance efforts.
  • Perform all other duties as required.

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must be able to pass a background check.
  3. Physical including Drug & Alcohol Testing prior to employment.
  4. Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  5. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, ability to hear, and clarity of vision.
  6. Must be available some evenings and weekends as required for cleanup duties.
  7. Knowledge of, or experience with equipment and procedures associated with routine custodial duties.
  8. Ability to perform manual labor as required.
  9. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  10. Ability to lift up to and carry between 50 and 100 pounds.
  11. Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of times.
  12. Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach.
