Recreational Volleyball Official (Part Time)

Position Summary
T
he City of Big Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is seeking dependable and enthusiastic individuals to serve as Volleyball Officials for the Fall Women's Volleyball League. Volleyball Officials are responsible for officiating league games, enforcing rules, promoting sportsmanship, and ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all participants. This position requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, confidence in decision-making, and the ability to effectively manage games while maintaining a positive playing environment.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Work Schedule Officials must be available to work on Sundays throughout the volleyball season.
Typical shifts include:

Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Sunday: 3:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Officials are expected to arrive prior to scheduled game times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Officiate adult women's recreational volleyball games according to league rules and Recreation Department policies.
  • Ensure games begin on time and are conducted in a safe, organized, and efficient manner.
  • Make fair, consistent, and impartial judgment calls throughout each match.
  • Maintain game scores and monitor match timing as required.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with participants, coaches, spectators, and Recreation Department staff.
  • Resolve conflicts and disputes calmly, professionally, and respectfully.
  • Promote good sportsmanship and participant safety throughout all contests.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous volleyball playing, coaching, or officiating experience.
  • Sufficient knowledge of volleyball rules and gameplay.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make confident decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to remain impartial while managing games effectively.
  • Reliable attendance with consistent Sunday availability throughout the season.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volleyball officiating experience.
  • Volleyball referee training or certification.
