Firefighter
Position Summary Perform firefighting work in the protection of life and property; operate and assist in maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus and facilities. Participate and perform rescue operations. Administer pre-hospital care to the sick and injured. Assist and perform fire prevention activities, programs and tours. Perform related work as required.
Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily.
- Respond to fire alarms with fire apparatus; connect and control hose lines and nozzles; erect ladders; operate hydrants; use extinguishers, axes, pike poles, chain saws, lifelines and other tools
- Operate firefighting apparatus, pumps and other auxiliary fire equipment
- Remove persons from danger. Respond to medical emergencies and provide emergency medical care
- Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of a fire station, clean work areas and wash rooms, care for grounds and make minor repairs
- Wash and dry hoses
- Wash, clean and polish fire apparatus
- Participate in the pre-fire planning and prepare necessary reports
- Maintain equipment including air packs and extinguishers and power tools
- Participate in overhaul and salvage operations
- Participate in drills and other training functions and classes
- Perform related work as required

- Knowledge of the geography and principal locations in the City
- Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations
- Ability to work effectively with supervisors, other employees and the general public
- Ability to walk, crawl, climb and maneuver to complete duties 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10
- Ability to communicate effectively to complete duties 1, 2, 3 and 10
- Ability to see well to complete duties 1 through 10
- Ability to hear well to complete duties 1, 2, 3 and 10
- Ability to life 90 pounds to complete duties 1, 2 and 3
- Required training includes graduation from high school or its equivalent
- Certification as a Firefighter I and II is required
- Certification as Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) is required
- A valid Michigan driver's license is also required
