City Garage Laborer

Supervision Required: Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Works Street Superintendent.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties and Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (these examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform)/
1.) Perform such manual tasks as constructing, grading and patching streets; cleaning sewers; assist in repairing water leaks; repairing sidewalks; erecting and repairing fences, signs and recreation equipment; mowing grass; planting and maintaining trees, shrubs and flower beds; removing trash and litter from parks and recreation areas; erecting traffic signs and pavement marking; collect brush and leaves; and removing ice and snow from City streets and sidewalks.
2.) Operate tractors, trailers, trucks, air compressors, graders, backhoes, sewer cleaners, mowers, snow blowers/plows, jack hammers and power saws.
3.) Respond to Public Works emergency assignments.
4.) Put up and take down decorations.
5.) Assist, as needed, with building, grounds maintenance, swimming pool maintenance and perform minor repair on vehicles, mechanical equipment and power tools.
6.) Operate two-way radio communication system.
7.) Load and move materials, furniture or equipment.
8.) Perform related work as required.

Essential Functions, Qualifications, and KSA's For Employment
All of the following functions, qualifications, KSA's and duties are essential. An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:

Knowledge of the methods, safety practices, materials and equipment utilized in routine public works and landscape maintenance activities.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of trucks, tractors, mowers and other power driven tools and equipment.
Knowledge of traffic laws and safety procedures and practices.
Skill in the operation of trucks, tractors and power driven tools.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather and under various working conditions.
Mechanical aptitude to operate all mechanical equipment to complete duties 1 through 7.
Must have good vision and be able to operate equipment without limitation to complete 1 and 2.
Strength: physical condition to lift at least 100 pounds regularly to complete duties, 1, 4, 5 and 7.
Ability to walk, crawl, climb and maneuver where physical mobility is required to climb towers and crawl into manholes and trenches to complete duties.
Proficiency in operating a salt spreader, scraper truck, front end loader, and street sweeper as well as smaller motorized equipment.
Graduation from an accredited high school or the equivalent.
One year of related experience.
Must poses a valid CDL license.
