The City of Big Rapids is accepting applications for the position of full-time Police Officer. Minimum requirements: High school diploma or equivalent, two years of credits from an accredited college or university, MCOLES licensed/license-able, OR have completed an academy pre-test, and are at least 18 years old. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter along with the City of Big Rapids application. Applicants will be required to participate in a multi-phase hiring process including but not limited to a written test, oral interview, ride-along, medical evaluations, psychological evaluations and background investigation process. Applications must be completed online on the City’s website www.cityofbr.org. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Lateral Opportunities: Applicants with three (3) years or more of police experience with up-to-date certification are to enter the pay scale at the after one (1) year rate of pay upon hire. At completion of the probationary period the employee shall be paid the after two (2) year rate of pay. Applicants with five (5) years’ or more of police experience with up-to-date certification are to enter the pay scale at the after one (1) year rate of pay upon hire. At completion of the probationary period the employee shall be paid the after three (3) year rate of pay. See appendix “A” of the Police Officer’s labor contract on our website for the current pay scale.
Benefits: Our officers work 12 hours shifts (4 shifts on, 3 off, 3 shifts on 4 off), we offer 11 paid holidays and earnings into Vacation, Compensatory, and Holiday banks, in addition to sick leave payout of 50% upon retirement, longevity pay, and tuition reimbursement. We have a defined contribution pension plan in which the City of Big Rapids contributes 7% of the employee’s compensation. If the employee contributes 3% of their compensation into their account, the city will contribute an additional 3%.
